Kristina's Project

Owl eggs hatch at different times because their eggs are laid at different times and because of the varying strengths of the owlets inside the eggs. Young owlets may even try to feed younger siblings. Two to three hours after birth a baby owlet should end up looking like a ball of fur. As young owlets grow they become more aware of their surroundings and can move about their nest.

Once the baby owls are strong and old enough to come out of their nest, they will come out and start looking around and branching which is hopping from branch to branch. If the baby owlet falls from a tree branch it will either climb up the tree and branch back to its nest or it will just remain on the ground and wait until it can fly in order to get back. But that will not be long. The adult owls are not strong enough to bring owls back to the nest, but, they do protect and feed the owl on the ground. The owl will be able to fly in about ten weeks.

After one year, the baby owls go out to see if they can find a nest. Once they find the nest that they want they go out to attract a mate. This process is called courting. Their nesting choice depends on the supply of food and prey. Mated pairs stay together for many years.

Owls life span ranges from five to twenty-seven years. Owls are eaten by predators and also die from disease and starvation. Others are caught in traps and shot illegally. Owls sometimes eat rodents that have been fed or sprayed with poisons. These poisons make the owls sick and may even kill them. These are some of the ways that owls die unnaturally.
