MRS. HAUSER'S THIRD GRADE CLASS MAKES A MURAL

Mrs. Hauser read a book to us called Steal Away Home by Jane Kristof. It's a story about two runaway slaves who escape north on the Underground Railroad to reunite with their father.

A picture of the final mural Mrs. Hauser cut a big sheet of mural paper into twenty-five pieces, one for each person in our class. We illustrated our favorite scene from the book using cray-pas, an oil based crayon. Each piece had a number on the back so we could put the pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle when we were finished. There's also a wavy line that runs across the mural called the line of continuity which unites all of the pieces.

We wrote letters to the author telling her how much we loved the book. We begged her to finish writing the sequel and to try to publish it. (We knew from previous letters that she had written a sequel several years ago). She responded to us in a letter with many details and gave us the great news that she had finished the sequel and is in the process of trying to get it published. Our whole class felt a great deal of felicity when she responded to our letter with such happy news!
