The November 6, 2009 Estabrook Newsletter is hot off the press. This year the PTA Newletter and the Estabrook Updates are being combined into one Estabrook Newsletter.

The Estabrook Library's featured books for November 2009 are about astronomy, planets, stars, the solar system, and space exploration. The LPS Curriculum Benchmarks for Grades K-5 have been added to our web site's Curriculum Section.

General Information About Our School

The Joseph Estabrook School is an elementary school serving a diverse student body of about 455 students in grades Kindergarten through 5. Our student body is about 67.9% white, 24.6% asian, 5.3% black, and 2.2% hispanic. It is one of the 9 schools in the 6,227 student Lexington Public School system. It is located in historic Lexington, MA, where the village common, now called the Battle Green, was the site of the first shots fired in the Revolutionary War.

Class size ranges from 15 in Kindergarten to 24 in Grade 4. Click this link for the Estabrook School MCAS results. The 2009 spring MCAS Estabrook 5th grade Math results were 2nd highest of schools in all of Masachusetts. The 3rd grade Math MCAS results were 3rd in the state. The 5th grade English results were 3rd in the state, in a 3 way tie with schools in Sudbury and Brookline.

Who Was Joseph Estabrook?

Joseph Estabrook,1669-1733, was the first school teacher in Lexington. Born in Concord, he bought a 200 acre farm in Lexington in 1693. According to Hudson's History of the Town of Lexington, "In 1716 Captain Estabrook was employed as a teacher and continued his school five months, for which 15 pounds were paid him from the town treasury." Hudson's book, available at Lexington's Cary Memorial Library also indicates that Joseph Estabrook was Town Clerk, and was elected Selectman (still an important town executive position) several times and served a term as Representative to the General Court which was the Massachusetts Colony's legislature. As a Captain he also commanded a local military company.

About Our Staff

The Estabrook Teaching Staff consists of 23 Classroom Teachers and about 26 specialists such as Art, Music, Reading, Languages, Special Needs, etc. shared in many cases with other Lexington Schools. We also have a number of tutors, classroom and other aides, secretaries, lunchroom staff, custodians and school volunteers who all contribute to the smooth operation of the school.
